Strategy games give units advantages against some opponents and disadvantages against others. The structure exists to prevent an optimal army from existing, and it does more work than it appears to.

Without counters, one option wins

If units differed only in cost and strength, players could calculate the most efficient unit and build it exclusively. The game would reduce to an economic race.

Counter relationships remove that possibility by ensuring every choice is bad against something, so no single composition is safe.

The result is that army composition becomes a decision under uncertainty rather than a solved calculation, which is where strategic depth comes from.

Counters convert scouting into value

If the correct response depends on what the opponent is building, then finding out what they are building becomes worth spending resources on.

This is why scouting units exist and why denying vision is a strategy in itself. The counter system is what gives information a price.

A game without counters would make scouting nearly worthless, since there would be no decision that the information could change.

Timing determines whether a counter arrives

Knowing the correct response is insufficient if producing it takes longer than the opponent needs to attack. Counters are bounded by production time.

This creates the central tension of many strategy games: committing early is efficient and inflexible, while staying adaptable costs tempo.

Designers tune production times specifically to control how punishing a misread should be, which is a more precise instrument than adjusting unit strength.

Hard counters and soft counters behave differently

A hard counter defeats its target decisively regardless of quantity or control, which makes composition decisive and reduces the value of skill in engagements.

A soft counter provides an advantage that good positioning or numbers can overcome, so the composition matters and does not settle the fight.

Most modern designs favour soft counters, because hard ones make matches feel decided by a build decision made minutes before the fight occurred.

Asymmetric factions complicate the structure

When sides have different unit sets, counter relationships must be balanced across every pairing rather than within one shared roster.

A unit with no available counter in one matchup can distort that pairing entirely while being unremarkable elsewhere, which is why balance patches often target specific matchups.

This is also why asymmetric games take far longer to balance. The number of relationships to verify grows with every faction added.
