A shooter's rhythm is largely determined by geometry. The arrangement of routes and sight lines decides where players meet, how often, and on what terms.

Sight line length assigns weapons to spaces

A corridor with a long, straight view rewards precise, slow-firing weapons because targets are visible for a while at distance.

A room with broken lines of sight rewards fast, close-range weapons, since engagements begin at short notice and at short range.

Designers distribute these deliberately so that different loadouts have territory where they are correct, which is what keeps an arsenal in use rather than reducing to one option.

Route count controls predictability

A space with a single entrance is easy to hold and easy to avoid, which produces stalemates as both sides decline the unfavourable engagement.

Multiple approaches make holding a position harder and encourage movement, because a defender cannot watch everything and must accept risk.

Too many routes remove the value of position entirely, and fights become chaotic in a way that rewards reaction over planning.

Choke points concentrate action deliberately

Narrow connections between larger areas force encounters to occur in known places, which is what makes competitive maps readable to players and spectators.

Concentration also creates the tactical problem the mode is built around: how to take a defended space, which is where coordinated play becomes visible.

The risk is that a choke point too strongly favours the defender, at which point the map stops producing fights and starts producing waiting.

Vertical space multiplies the problem

Adding levels means players must watch above and below as well as around, which raises the amount of information a player must track at once.

Height usually confers advantage, so elevated positions become objectives in themselves and routes to them become contested.

Excessive verticality overwhelms awareness, which is why many competitive maps are comparatively flat and use height in specific, limited places.

Spawn placement is part of the layout

Where players re-enter determines how long they travel before the next fight, which sets the tempo more directly than any other single factor.

Spawns that place players close to the action produce continuous combat and frequent unfair deaths from behind. Distant spawns produce calm and long walks.

Dynamic systems that choose a spawn based on where opponents are attempt to balance the two, and their failures are the source of most complaints about map flow.
