Viability is relative, not absolute

Balancing for one damages the other. A change that reins in professional dominance can render an option useless for everyone else.

Some games resolve this by applying different rules in tournament settings. The cost is that spectators no longer play the same game they are watching.

Teams adapt at different speeds

Organisations with analysts and dedicated practice time convert patch information into prepared strategies faster than those without.

Immediately after a patch, results therefore reflect preparation infrastructure as much as player skill. The advantage decays as strategies become public.

This is why patch timing before a tournament is contentious. Changing the game late rewards resources rather than performance.
